Solar Energy in your backyard

clothesline

With Spring already in bloom and summer just around the corner, it’s time to start leaving your clothes out to dry.  Living on an island means pretty much all year long we have the luxury of choosing the green option of drying our clothes -that is on a clothesline- over using the dryer.  Every time you choose to use your dryer it produces carbon emissions, and as you know this is harmful for the environment.  So be eco chic and choose the clothesline.  By drying your clothes outside you are taking advantage of solar energy that is right in your backyard.  All you need is a sunny day.  Your clothes will dry in a few hours and have that lovely just off the clothesline scent, dryer sheets just can’t beat that.

If you don’t already have a clothesline, A.L. Thompson’s sells portable ones, that are of a decent size and inexpensive.  You just need to invite over some awesome friends/family to help you install it, and you will have it up and ready for use in no time.  Bonus, if a storm or hurricane is lurking around you can easily fold it up and tuck it away in your laundry room, as it takes up very little space.

What to do if you live in an apartment, and don’t have a backyard for a clothesline… You can make use of your balcony and dry clothes on a portable clothes rack.  Though you may not be able to dry a full load of laundry this way, at least small loads, or towels can be dried in an eco friendly way.  You are still reducing your carbon footprint by not having to always use the dryer.

Sometimes it may be necessary to use your dryer, but if you don’t have to, then choose the green option, and use your clothesline.
