World Environment Day 2015

This post is dedicated to the upcoming World Environment. World Environment Day, June 5th, was designated by the United Nations.  This year’s theme is:   A great theme! It encourages us to step back and evaluate our consumption habits. Ultimately, there needs to be responsible management of the earth’s resources. Natural resources are finite, and our needs and wants infinite.  Thus, the need for harmony among humanity, the environment and our economy- all of which are connected. It is thought that, “By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.” (UNEP) Ultimately, the goal is for us to live sustainably, and being conscientious of our consumption habits. Our three main areas of consumption are water, food and energy. Below are some stats on the usage and consumption of these resources. Water -Less than 3% of the world’s water is fresh (drinkable), of which 2.5% is frozen in the Antarctica, Arctic and …

Summer Heat Rising + Electricity Bills Skyrocketing

Summer the absolute best time of the year.  The only downer about summer is the rising electricity bills.  It doesn’t help that thanks to climate change and global warming we are experiencing more intense summer heat around the globe, not to mention other irregularities in the weather like more droughts, tornadoes, and intense hurricanes. Here in Cayman our glorious summer days whilst for the most part a blessing, it can be a curse, for instance the impact it has on our electricity bills,- you just can’t not run your air conditioning when living on an island (unless our famous Christmas breeze is waltzing through, then the A/C is trumped by the cool salty sea breeze). Here are 10 Eco Tips that may help you lower your electricity bill or  at least help you avoid having your bill drastically increase over the summer. Eco Tips For Saving Energy + Keeping Your Electricity Bill Manageable 1, Turn off the A/C when you are not home.  A/C is one of the biggest energy consumers. A/C is a must for …

Global Wind Day: Islands + Sea Breeze

Today is Global Wind Day! That’s pretty awesome! One of my hopes is that there will be an increase in renewable energy sources here in Cayman.  As an island we are blessed with glorious sunshine all year long, a lovely sea breeze,  and of course, we are surrounded by the ever sparkling ocean.  Thus, we have the ability to implement more renewable energy sources whether its wind, solar, or water energy, the bottom line is the resources are there.  Not to mention, as a small island we should strive to be as energy efficient and environmentally responsible as possible. The windmill in the photo is located at The Greenhouse in West Bay, they are pretty awesome! Wind is one of the coolest forms of renewable energy, and it is a great choice as a means of an alternative energy source.  One of the key reasons to encourage more windmills and/or use of wind energy is because is does not cause air or water pollution.  Overall, it would be fantastic if on a global scale there …
