DIY: Eco Chic Photo Canvas

This Christmas, I am attempting to make more homemade gifts.  For your friends and family who love photos, a fun and easy project is transferring a photo onto a canvas.  After researching this on Pinterest (which has a wealth of information for DIY projects) I tried out a few different methods.  After some trial and error I finally found a method which worked for me.  For my photo transfer onto canvas, I choose one of my favorite photos of my mother and I which was taken on one of her birthdays.  Yep, the camera got me when my eyes were closed.  Nonetheless, I love this photo. What You Will Need  Canvas, photo, mod podge, paintbrush, and ribbon -which is optional- Easy Steps To Follow Step 1. Paint the canvas with mod podge Step 2. Paint the back of the photo and then carefully place the photo onto the canvas. Step 3. Add a couple of layers of mod podge over the photo.  This creates a protective seal. Silver Thatch: Cayman’s National Tree

Our beautiful island that is set in the deep blue Caribbean Sea, is graced with a handful of majestic trees, such as the Cayman Logwood, Mahogany and Silver Thatch Palm.  The Silver Thatch Palm is Cayman’s sacred national tree.  A unique tree which is indigenous to Cayman.  I find that there is a greater abundance of Silver Thatch on the eastern side of the island.  It is a spectacular view to see the Silver Thatch palms swaying in the refreshing sea breeze, untouched, scattered along the remote and undeveloped areas in East End and North Side. When I hear the words Silver Thatch the first thing that comes to mind is Caymanian Heritage.  I think of the wonderful items handcrafted by Caymanians such as Silver Thatch, baskets, hats, fans and rope.   Back in the olden days Silver Thatch had two primary uses, such as: making thatch rooftops and rope.   A thatch roof would last up to 5-6 years.  There is an old folklore claiming that the thatch palms would be harvested during the night of …

The decor is just fabulous! As it is very eco chic and environment friendly.  You will instantly fall in love with this place.  It is such a treat to find a place that repurposes items, and incorporates being environmentally responsible into their decor.  Overall, Jessie’s Juice Bar really sets the bar.  Simply put it is a wonderful local hot spot. I’ll Drink To That… DIY Chic Chalkboard Paint Repurposed Bottles

Over the weekend I found some time to work on some eco art projects.  I had a fantastic time!    Here is another eco chic way you can repurpose your wine bottles and glass jars.  Confession, this may have been one of those catch 22 art projects.  On one hand, I tried to be eco friendly by repurposing the glass bottles into chic decorative pieces for dinner or birthday parties by painting them in chalkboard paint.  Yet, the chalkboard spray paint may not have been so eco friendly. What you will need: chalkboard paint, chalk, wine bottles or glass jars. Easy Steps:  1. I bought some chalkboard paint in a spray can.  It was easy to use and pretty cheap.  (I purchased it at AL Thompson) Confession, it may have not been the most eco friendly choice, but I could not find one that was made with eco friendly products.  I felt it better to buy the spray can version as opposed to a can of chalkboard paint.  The spray can had the amount I …

Vinyl Records, Summer Days + the ticking of a clock

  Only just recently have I gotten back into a mood of putting my records on and letting them play, (in reality it is my iTunes collection of music playing from my iPod or laptop) I can’t even remember the last time I played an actual cd and let the music fill the spaces and hallways of my house.  I have to confess it’s always been a secret wish or unfilled dream of mine to have a collection of vinyl records and a vintage record player.  I was heartbroken when I had to let go of my mothers collection of vinyl records.  She must have started her collection from when she was a teenager or in her early twenties- I remember seeing a lot of Nat King Cole and Bing Crosby.  She brought them all the way from London to Cayman.  Unfortunately her collection was ruined after hurricane Ivan (2004), and it was only just last year I finally parted with them.  There was no way to restore them.  I just had to let them …
