“Ugly Food” A Major Contributor to Food Waste: An Interview with Evan Lutz, CEO and Co-Founder of Hungry Harvest

Photo Credit: Hungry Harvest Spoiler Alert: 6 billion pounds of produce go to waste every year.  -Evan Lutz. Food Waste is a Serious Issue It is astonishing how much food goes to waste every year. What causes food waste? Just simply tossing scraps from your dinner plate or leftovers in the bin contributes to food waste. In addition, restaurants and supermarkets throwing away unsold food plays a large part in food waste. Recently, it was announced that France has become the first country to take a stand against food waste in a major way by banning supermarkets from “throwing away or destroying unsold food, forcing them instead to donate it to charities and food banks” (The Guardian). I believe other countries should follow suit, as this ban is heading in the right direction to help reduce food waste and food insecurity. When you look at the bigger picture, it is very concerning that copious amounts of food is constantly being wasted and ending up in the trash or landfill when there is “Some 795 million people in …

Introducing Farmer’s Friday

To keep things fresh, I am starting a new series on the blog called “Farmer Friday’s.”  My goal is to spotlight local farmers in Cayman as well as discuss the benefits of supporting local and sustainability every Friday.   Why is supporting local farmers important?   1.  Practicing sustainability is beneficial for the environment. 2.  Helps our local economy.   I have always been baffled by the amount of produce our small island imports when we have the ability to grow a variety of fruits and vegetables.  Our island is blessed with pretty good weather all year long, which allows us to be in position where we can grow our own produce.  I often wonder could we reduce the amount of food waste if we were more supportive of our local farmers?  Picture the overwhelming amount of food every supermarket on the island imports of fruits and vegetables alone.  There is no way all of that is consumed, I’m confident a large portion is wasted on account of not being bought.  Don’t get me …

Countdown to Zero Waste Week

Today you are in for a real treat as Eco Chic Cayman is proud to present its first guest blogger, Rachelle, the creator of “Zero Waste Week,” a campaign in the U.K which seeks to educate and create awareness about food waste. Recent research shows that 30 to 50% of the food we produce on this planet never reaches a human stomach. It gets rejected because it’s the wrong shape, it gets trashed because supermarkets order too much and it gets thrown away by householders when they buy too much or cook too much. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people (one in eight) in the world, suffer from food poverty. Yet the irony is we already produce enough food to feed everybody across the globe! There is a grassroots awareness campaign called “Zero Waste Week” which takes place 2-8th September 2013. This year’s theme is “Use it up!” and you are invited to reconsider YOUR food waste. Not only is reducing food waste better for the environment but …
