Force Blue: On A Mission To Protect Coral Reefs

Cayman Islands: Coral Nursery Conservation Program

  The caribbean has already lost 80% of its coral reefs. Grand Cayman Eco Divers in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment and various local dive establishments have teamed up for over a year aspiring to maintain coral nurseries to aid in conservation, sustainability and restoration of Cayman’s coral reefs. The program has developed effective strategies for protecting and restoring damaged areas of coral reef.  In short, their innovative approach is to grow Staghorn coral in nurseries.  Coral fragments are grown on structures referred to as coral trees.  These “trees” are made from PVC and fiberglass rods.  The fragments of coral grow into colonies.  After significant growth they are then later removed from the tree and out planted onto damaged coral reef areas to aid in their recovery.  For longevity it is proven to provide a sustainable way to maintain healthy reefs.  The successful transplantation and growth of the coral fragments help create diversity in the ecosystem as well as more resilient  reefs.   Talya Meltem is the founder of Bella Noya, a collection of beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Saucha: Conscious Living is cooking up a storm, serving up some red hot new items to add to their portfolio of savory and sweet vegan treats.  Valentine’s Day might be over, but you can eat cake any day of the week.  Saucha is delighted to introduce their (Beet) Red Velvet Cupcake.  For those of you looking for something more savory, then you will be happy to know that Saucha has created a mini-tomato sauce along with tomato flax crackers.  These yummy new treats are made with locally sourced organic produce. Let Them Eat Cake Red Velvet cupcakes are my absolute favorite! I was thrilled once I found out Britta had made a batch of vegan and gluten free red velvet cupcakes.  To give the cupcakes that vibrant signature red look, Britta used beets as the primary ingredient.  The delicious frosting was cashew cheese, a spin on the traditional cream cheese frosting.  I found the frosting and cake to have a well rounded balance of sweet and savory.  I personally, am not a huge fan of …

  It’s that time of year! Writing Christmas cards always invokes a little nostalgia. I treasure the art of writing letters and cards. Emails might be the green way to send season greetings, but you can feel satisfied in knowing that by purchasing The Cayman Islands National Trust’s Christmas Greeting Cards, you have helped the environment. Proceeds benefit The National Trust, helping them with their environmental programs and campaigns. This year the design takes us back to Christmas Past, old Fort George in Christmas Lights. The 2014 card was designed by local 19 year old artist Raidez Perez. Her stunning artwork depicts peaceful times at the newly renovated Fort George. Signed, sealed and delivered.
