Force Blue: On A Mission To Protect Coral Reefs

“One Team, One Fight.” Force Blue is an innovative non-profit organization embarking on an unprecedented mission to change the lives of Combat Divers and Special Operations Force Veterans by repurposing their skill set to aid in the recovery and preservation of critical coral reefs.  By virtue, teaching the veterans to adapt their skills for the betterment of the environment acts as a form of therapy and helps to restore the lives of veterans dealing with PTS and depression.  Force Blue has carefully built the program focusing on improving the lives of vets and offering them an opportunity to continue living a life of purpose, giving them a new mission— saving critical coral reefs and ecosystems.  Veterans often struggle with the need to be part of a team and have a mission to accomplish and/or cause to fight for.  Force Blue has devised a way for veterans to maintain that core component of their lives by deploying them all over the world to help communities save their critical coral reefs.  Veterans taking part in the initiative …

Cayman Islands: Coral Nursery Conservation Program

The caribbean has already lost 80% of its coral reefs. Grand Cayman Eco Divers in collaboration with the Cayman Islands Department of Environment and various local dive establishments have teamed up for over a year aspiring to maintain coral nurseries to aid in conservation, sustainability and restoration of Cayman’s coral reefs. The program has developed effective strategies for protecting and restoring damaged areas of coral reef.  In short, their innovative approach is to grow Staghorn coral in nurseries.  Coral fragments are grown on structures referred to as coral trees.  These “trees” are made from PVC and fiberglass rods.  The fragments of coral grow into colonies.  After significant growth they are then later removed from the tree and out planted onto damaged coral reef areas to aid in their recovery.  For longevity it is proven to provide a sustainable way to maintain healthy reefs.  The successful transplantation and growth of the coral fragments help create diversity in the ecosystem as well as more resilient  reefs. Cayman Eco Divers are seeking to expand the current Coral …

Bella Noya

Talya Meltem is the founder of Bella Noya, a collection of beautiful handcrafted jewelry. Talya pursued her dream of having a career in fashion by studying at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in San Fransisco (FIDM) to later start her own jewelry line.  Her collection is greatly inspired by the Caribbean.  Talya in her own right is an artist as she handcrafts jewelry into works of art.  She takes great care in selecting materials, composing and curating the pieces that will be used in her collection(s).  At 27, Talya is an accomplished jewelry designer,  creating signature pieces that reflect her inspirations and influences at a particular moment in time.  She looks forward to creating a new collection to debut later this year, capturing the essence of new inspirations she draws from.  For Talya, jewelry making is her form of art.  As she grows as an artist/jewelry designer and continues to find new sources of inspiration her collections and style will reflect that. Q&A with Talya Meltem 1. What is the meaning behind …

Red: The New Flavor of The Week

Saucha: Conscious Living is cooking up a storm, serving up some red hot new items to add to their portfolio of savory and sweet vegan treats.  Valentine’s Day might be over, but you can eat cake any day of the week.  Saucha is delighted to introduce their (Beet) Red Velvet Cupcake.  For those of you looking for something more savory, then you will be happy to know that Saucha has created a mini-tomato sauce along with tomato flax crackers.  These yummy new treats are made with locally sourced organic produce. Let Them Eat Cake Red Velvet cupcakes are my absolute favorite! I was thrilled once I found out Britta had made a batch of vegan and gluten free red velvet cupcakes.  To give the cupcakes that vibrant signature red look, Britta used beets as the primary ingredient.  The delicious frosting was cashew cheese, a spin on the traditional cream cheese frosting.  I found the frosting and cake to have a well rounded balance of sweet and savory.  I personally, am not a huge fan of …

This Holiday Season: Preserve Heritage

It’s that time of year! Writing Christmas cards always invokes a little nostalgia. I treasure the art of writing letters and cards. Emails might be the green way to send season greetings, but you can feel satisfied in knowing that by purchasing The Cayman Islands National Trust’s Christmas Greeting Cards, you have helped the environment. Proceeds benefit The National Trust, helping them with their environmental programs and campaigns. This year the design takes us back to Christmas Past, old Fort George in Christmas Lights. The 2014 card was designed by local 19 year old artist Raidez Perez. Her stunning artwork depicts peaceful times at the newly renovated Fort George. Signed, sealed and delivered. For more info about ordering these beautiful Christmas cards contact marketing@nationaltrust.org.ky  or visit them 11th December 6pm-9pm at the lighting of Fort George. Christmas Past Be sure to preserve a little heritage and culture this holiday season by visiting the Cayman Islands National Trust as they light Fort George, on 11th December at 6pm. The Real Pirates Of The Caribbean

Yo ho! It’s that time of year Pirates Week! This is the real Pirates of the Caribbean.  Today is a short but sweet post.  In the spirit of Cayman’s biggest festival Pirates Week,  Michelle and I teamed up to make our very own 1 of a kind t-shirts. I would like to take this opportunity to honor her dad, as it was Mr. Mike Lockwood who started this amazing festival.  I will always remember how much pride, passion and dedication he put into  creating such a spectacular event every year.  His legacy lives on through his daughter Michelle, and son Michael Lockwood.  My favorite memory of Pirates Week is watching the fireworks on the iron shore with my best friend and her family. Here is a vintage pirates week photo.   The “Mrs. Captain Jack Sparrow” T-shirts Who doesn’t love Captain Jack Sparrow?  We absolutely love him! So, my bestie and I repurposed some old white t-shirts and made these.  We used special fabric transfer paper to iron the design on.   Happy Pirates Week …
