Cayman Recycles, Creating A Greener Tomorrow

  I absolutely love to hear about new “green” initiatives in Cayman.  It has been long overdue that Cayman started a proper recycling program, as a small island it is imperative that we strive to work towards a greener tomorrow.  Unfortunately, as consumers we have infinite wants and finite resources.  On a whole, as our desire to buy and consume more products grows, we are depleting our natural resources at a rapid rate.  Without implementing proper recycling programs or by choosing not to recycle, has a tremendous negative impact on the environment.  Thankfully, Cayman is working towards offering more greener options and recycling programs for the community.  A huge thanks to JUNK for starting a recycling program.  A special thank you to Kirk Market for sponsoring a recycling collection facility at their location.  Mr. Alberto Thompson, operations manager of JUNK Removal and Recycling, made an excellent point “if every household in the Cayman Islands were compelled to recycle, the amount of trash coming into the dump could be cut in half” (Cayman Compass).  JUNK is …

Cayman Shark Project Part 1

Recently, I had the privilege of watching a short video about sharks in Cayman, filmed and produced by the Dubock brothers, showcasing Cayman’s Department of Environment’s Shark Project over the last few years.  They did a fantastic job!! It was a real treat to see dedicated individuals and the team at the Department of Environment working together to learn more about the sharks that pass through Cayman waters.  After gathering the information, they educate the public about these very misunderstood animals.  The bottom line is that sharks are integral to our ecosystem and we cannot afford to continue losing sharks worldwide at the magnitude that we currently are – every year 100 million sharks are killed. Generally, the shark projects overseen by the Department of Environment mainly seek to measure the amount of sharks which travel through Cayman waters.  The dedicated team record the various species of sharks which travel through our waters.  They also observe if there are any trends or patterns in terms of where the sharks are coming from and going to.  …

Repurpose Glass Jars & Wine Bottles the Eco Chic Way

  This week I wrote about recycling glass in Cayman, today I would like to share ways to repurpose glass. Glass Jars Instead of tossing out a glass jar that use to store spaghetti sauce or peanut butter, think of creative ways that you can repurpose those jars so that they have a functional value.   Here are some ideas… 5 Repurposed Glass Jars Ideas 1. Use them to store baking goods like flour, sugar and pancake mix. 2. Use them as candle holders. 3. Store fashion accessories and materials like needles & thread, buttons, pins etc 4. Store pennies for a rainy day. 5. Use them to store small office supplies, like pins, paperclips, staples etc.    Repurposed Wine Bottles: Eco Chic Shabby Wine bottles can be quite versatile.  A previous article I wrote, Eco Chic Water Bottles was about repurposing wine bottles as water bottles.  Wine bottles can also serve for decorative purposes.
