World Environment Day 2015

This post is dedicated to the upcoming World Environment. World Environment Day, June 5th, was designated by the United Nations.  This year’s theme is:   A great theme! It encourages us to step back and evaluate our consumption habits. Ultimately, there needs to be responsible management of the earth’s resources. Natural resources are finite, and our needs and wants infinite.  Thus, the need for harmony among humanity, the environment and our economy- all of which are connected. It is thought that, “By 2050, if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and with a rising population expected to reach 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption.” (UNEP) Ultimately, the goal is for us to live sustainably, and being conscientious of our consumption habits. Our three main areas of consumption are water, food and energy. Below are some stats on the usage and consumption of these resources. Water -Less than 3% of the world’s water is fresh (drinkable), of which 2.5% is frozen in the Antarctica, Arctic and …

The Importance of Sustainable Farms

Happy Farmer Friday! A short but sweet post.  I came across this great little video discussion about the future of sustainable farming.  The video draws attention to important points to consider when comparing small farms and big farms.  It is quite insightful and worth spending a few minutes to watch.  Enjoy! Eco Fact: “Currently, 2 Billion people rely on smallholder farms for their food.”   Have a lovely weekend! with love, from one tree hugger to another, xo

Sustainable Farming

It’s Farmer Friday! Today’s post is a short but sweet one.  I came across a pretty insightful TEDx Talk about sustainable farming and why it matters.  It is definitely worth checking out! I was never really one for economics, was not my favorite class in University by any means, but I got through it… The beginning of the talk gets into the economics but stick with it, the analogies are good and make a lot of sense.  Overall, a really good Tedx Talk about sustainable farming. Enjoy! Sustainable Farming Please support your local farmers and buy local whenever possible.                 Have a lovely weekend! With love from one tree hugger to another, xo

Farmer Friday’s: Farm Fresh Eggs

A while back you may have read “Got Eggs? Local.  Organic.  Sustainable.”  a feature on the Cayman Egg Farm run by brothers Shanan and Pasmore Harrison.  Today I will be updating you on their lovely, not-for-profit, Cayman farm. The Harrison brothers  have been pleasantly overwhelmed with growing support from the community and are doing their absolute best to meet the demand for their locally organic farmed eggs.  The strong support from the community has allowed them to continue maintaining their farm, providing excellent care for their hens, with an additional 25 hens, all of which are layers and don’t require a rooster. The proceeds continue to go towards Shanan’s ministry which has started a series of cooking classes for the youth and adults.  The cooking classes have been well received, and have been a blessing to both Shanan and the individuals who come to his cooking classes.  The youth are very enthusiastic and keen to learn.  There is a lot of educational value for them as they not only acquire lifelong practical cooking skills, but …

Juice Bars + Summer Days

Drinking all natural & 100% organic juices and smoothies that are full of flavor and jam-packed with healthy benefits is very in vogue right now- just as it should be.  Cayman is very blessed to have the one and only lovely Jessie’s Juice Bar located at Camana Bay.  The juice bar is stocked with vibrant fresh fruit and veggie juices, along with tasty savory eats and yummy treats.  It is the perfect place to stop by for a healthy lunch or smoothie while on the go. The decor is just fabulous! As it is very eco chic and environment friendly.  You will instantly fall in love with this place.  It is such a treat to find a place that repurposes items, and incorporates being environmentally responsible into their decor.  Overall, Jessie’s Juice Bar really sets the bar.  Simply put it is a wonderful local hot spot. Perhaps the essence of Jessie’s Juice bar is that it is a family run business which truly cares about offering fresh and healthy food and drink options.  Items …
