Eco Documentary: Fragile Cayman

Photo Credit: Michael Maes (Spotted Eagle Ray) Yesterday I had the privilege of watching an incredible Eco Documentary called Fragile Cayman directed and produced by Michael Maes, a fellow environmental enthusiast.  Michael  is also a diver and photographer extraordinaire, here in the Cayman Islands.  His short but powerful documentary, which was featured in the Cayman Islands Underwater Film Festival of 2012, is comprised of  absolutely stunning cinematography and a montage of incredible shots, which truly capture the essence and beauty of our ocean- specifically in Cayman waters.  The scene with the stingrays at Stingray City was just lovely! The Spotted Eagle Ray just gorgeous, my absolute favorite scenes. For me, it was like watching a silent movie, just a story told through motion pictures accompanied by instrumental music.  Watching the film you can’t help but question, why on earth would anyone not want to save the environment and protect the ocean.  Just watching the amazing footage you are completely mesmerized by the fundamental beauty that is our ocean and the marine life which resides there.  …

Eco Chic Shabby: Home Decor and Gardening

Here are a few ideas to get an eco chic shabby look for your home decor and gardening.  Being eco chic is all about thinking up creative ways to recycle, repurpose and reuse. 1. Glass Jar Repurposed Vase  You can repurpose glass jars as a vase for your flowers for that eco chic shabby look.  Repurpose a wooden crate to add some flare to the flower arrangement.  This look is great for outdoor patios and backyard dining. Tip: Repurpose glass jars with candles.  It looks fabulous as outdoor lighting for a dinner party on the patio. 2. Flower Ladder Repurpose an old or out of use ladder as an art piece in your garden.  Place different flower arrangements on each level of the ladder.  You can do this with herbs as well. 3. Crate of Flowers Finally, you can repurpose old crates to plant flowers in or herbs.

Eco Friendly Bouquet Options 1. Fresh Flowers in general comes to mind at the top of the eco-friendly flower list, but remember fresh flowers rack up a high carbon footprint because of deliveries, and even packaging materials and waste.  Imported flowers have a high carbon footprint as well. Supporting locally grown flowers, is a great choice as it promotes sustainability.  Personally, the greenest option is stopping and smelling the roses in your garden.  Flowers look most beautiful flourishing in a garden.  If you do buy fresh flowers limit how often you buy them.  When their moment has faded and it’s time to empty out the vase, repurpose the flowers as compost. 2. Potted Plants/Flowers Decorate your home with an arrangement of flowers that grow in your backyard.  Instead of a vase full of gorgeous flowers bought from a shop that will only last about a week, choose a trendy or funky plant pot -maybe one you have painted and designed as a summer project- with natural flowers blooming.  Plant some seeds and grow your own flowers. …

A Tree Huggers Bicycle

  For all you Tree Huggers, here is a neat way to repurpose an old bicycle which you don’t use anymore, and can’t bear to part with. 1. Give it a makeover.  Paint your bicycle a fun color. 2. Attach a basket to your bicycle if one doesn’t come with your bike already. 3. Place a plant, herbs or flowers inside the basket and ta-da you have repurposed your bicycle into a mobile garden, or at least you now have an eco chic art piece added to your garden. Alternatively, instead of placing a plant inside the basket you can repurpose the bicycle into a trendy art piece bird feeder.  Place a bowl inside the basket filled with bird food and before you know it birds will be flocking to your eco chic bike. with love from one tree hugger to another xo
