7 Creative Ways to Celebrate Earth Hour

Eco Chic Cayman is proud to team up with More Than A Mother blog to collaborate on fun ways to celebrate Earth Hour at home with friends and family.   Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, 24 March, from 8:30pm-9:30pm worldwide.  This Earth Hour, take time to reconnect with nature.  Remind yourself how beautiful this planet is.     Earth Hour is a global celebration that draws attention to important environmental issues.  It is an event organized by the World Wildlife Fund to raise awareness about climate change.  The first Earth Hour, was held in Sydney, Australia. It is a symbolic lights out event taking place on Saturday, 24th March at 8:30pm-9:30pm.  During that hour, lights are turned off around the globe, including national iconic monuments such as the Eiffel Tower and Empire State Building in solidarity to raise awareness about climate change.  Everybody can take part in this event.  The heart of the event is committing to turn off lights for one hour.  If you are celebrating at home, consider turning off unnecessary lights.  Earth Hour …

Marine Parks A Haven For Marine Life And Coral Reefs

Photo Credit: Courtney Platt Why We Need Marine Parks The ocean spans across 71% of the Earth’s surface.  Only 4% of the world’s oceans are protected.  Climate change continues to disrupt the balance of the ocean, threatening the health of the ocean.  The health of the ocean impacts marine life, the planet and (you guessed it) humans.  The ocean acts as a life support system for marine life which expands to human beings, as 50-70% of our oxygen comes from the ocean.  This works out to be more than all of the world’s rainforests combined.  It is imperative that our ocean’s are protected and kept clean.  One of the best ways we can help protect the ocean is by increasing the number of and the size of marine parks.  Increasing and expanding marine parks on a global scale benefits not only the planet but everyone. Photo Credit: Courtney Platt In recent news, there has been talk about the possibility of expanding marine parks in the Cayman Islands.  This is a positive thing!  Personally, I am …

Polar Bears On Thin Ice

(Photo Credit: Huffington Post. Thomas Kokta / Caters News) Happy Kindness Wednesday!  This week is Polar Bear Week!  How awesome is that?  World Polar Bear Day is 27th February 2015.  In honor of the upcoming World Polar Bear Day, I am dedicating this post to polar bears. I absolutely love polar bears- they are one of my favorite animals. (Photo Credit: BBC) Polar bears are living on thin ice…  Since, May 2008, under the US Endangered Species Act, polar bears were listed as a threatened species.  This action was taken as a result of, the ongoing loss of their Arctic home- due to climate change.  As the Arctic continues to warm up, there is potential for greater loss of this fragile habitat.  “According to the United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), ice coverage is likely to fall below one million square kilometres by 2050” (BBC)  Thus, if global action is not taken to preserve their natural habitat we could see a decline in the population of polar bears.  The thought of a world without polar …

Birthday Girl Wishes xo

Hello everyone!  I hope you all are having a beautiful day!  The weekend was crazy beautiful from a Masquerade Ball (will soon have a post on that with the behind the scenes of making the decorations) and then a pre-birthday party in 1920’s fashion. For me it’s the end of a beautiful era my roaring twenties are officially over.  Last night I celebrated the end of my twenties in true roaring twenties fashion (flapper girl costumes included) with a Gatsby themed party with some of the most amazing people I know! Thanks for the memories! Pink Champagne and Red Velvet Cupcakes was the way to end the night, and also makes a spectacular Birthday Breakfast. Now it is time to embrace and celebrate a new decade.  As far as I am concerned age is just a number and we are as old as we feel.  In the wise words of one of my favorite writers: “We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” – George Bernard …

Birthday Wishes, With Love xo

On this lovely Sunday Morning, I am thankful to be celebrating another birthday.  My birthday wish this year, is more compassion and selflessness in the world.  A couple of years ago I started a tradition on my birthday, and that was donating to different charities.  The older I got, the less I was interested in presents for myself, but rather I wanted to focus on how I could give back.  God has truly blessed me, and there really are no gifts that I need, a lot of wants but no real needs.  I believe in blessing others with the blessings God has given me.  So for all of my lovely friends, and family who are reading this if you feel inspired to make a donation to one of the charities I have mentioned below in honor of my birthday please do.  It is far better that we give, even on a small scale, than to give nothing at all. Now, I would like to share with you the charities/ non-proift organizations I have …

World Rhino Day 2013…

Today is World Rhino Day!  These incredible animals are sadly being poached for their horns, based on the mistaken belief that their horn can be used as a form of medicine to cure cancer.  The population of Rhinos has drastically depleted.  For example, the current population of Black Rhinos as of February 2013, there are about 4,880. (World Wildlife Fund).  There are 5 species of Rhinos, and they are all critically endangered.  It is imperative that we work together to make every effort to save these amazing animals.  One reason that it is important to help protect Rhinos is that by helping protect them other animals such as “elephants, buffalo and small game” are also protected (World Wildlife Fund). Please help spread awareness and educate others about the Rhinos and the critical state that they are in.  We cannot afford to lose these incredible animals.  They deserve better, we need to fight for them, and help save the Rhinos.  Help stop the illegal trade of the Rhino Horn.
