One Man’s Trash, Is Another’s Recycled Art

Marc Laurenson, local artist and cofounder of Stoak’d Cayman, is starting a new art movement in the Cayman Islands.  He is bridging his passion for art with conservation.  Specifically, he is repurposing materials that would have otherwise ended up in the landfill or recycle bins (depending on the product) into his canvas and transforming trash into bold artwork. One of his pieces in his new collection was constructed entirely from Coca Cola products.  Another, was made from Heineken products.  Marc’s newly inspired artwork, creates great statement pieces and an interesting commentary on consumerism.  It illustrates the impact marketing and advertising have on our society.   Consumerism has essentially become a major component of our culture.  We are constantly bombarded with marketing and advertisements pushing us to buy more, consume more products.  Marc’s artwork made entirely of consumer products forces us to examine the amount of products we consume and purchase on a daily basis.  Moreover, it highlights the urgency there is for us all to collectively make the effort to recycle, repurpose or reuses products …

Letter from the editor…4 Years Blogging

Hello everyone! Today, Eco Chic Cayman turns 4. A huge thank you to everyone who has supported me on this journey.  I am so very grateful to all my readers.  Thank you to all of my contributors, both photographers and guest writers.  It has been such a pleasure working with you.  I look forward to many more collaborations and thank you for inspiring me. Some Lessons Learned Along The Way… I started this blog when I was still living in Toronto.  I am grateful to this day for my friends encouraging me to start a blog, simply because I loved writing.  It took me a while to decide what I would write about.  I eventually chose to write about something I was passionate about— the environment.  I started blogging because it allowed me to write about topics I was interested in and passionate about.  But, it was more than that. Ultimately, I began this blog with the hope that I could make a difference.  I thought writing about environmental issues and wildlife would allow me to contribute …

Natasha Kozaily: Serenading Renegades… Singer, Artist and Environmentalist

Photo Credit: Courtney Platt and Natasha Kozaily Today I am pleased to announce that the highly anticipated sophomore album Serenading Renegades by Natasha Kozaily will be released on 25th September, 2013! This summer I was able to catch up with Natasha and talk about her upcoming album and passion for the environment.  The inspiration for this album as Natasha puts it is, “a love story beginning to end, with other imagined narratives.  A lot of it is personal.” For as long as I have known Natasha, she has always been a talented artist, inspiring to those around her, free spirited and concerned about the environment.  I love that Natasha has incorporated her passion for the environment into her love for music.  All of her songs are beautifully written, rich in layers, and straight from the heart.  Some songs featured on the album are “The Tiniest Elephant In The World” which was based on a short story of hers.  “A Song About A Tree” written one day while Natasha sat down at her piano and …

Let your heart be an amplifier….

“Waiting on the World to change” by: John Mayer is on repeat on my iPod today.  I love this song! The message of this song really resonates with me.  It’s one of those songs that I think will always speak to someone or a generation for that matter, no matter what decade or century we are in.  When it comes to music, everyone likes music for different reasons, some are all about the melody, the beats, and so they seek out songs that are great to dance to or run to.  Some look for songs that they can chill out to.  While others are all about being immersed in the lyrics, its all about the words, and so they search for songs that are deep with meaning.  That’s me, I love the lyrics.  My favorite song, is one where the lyrics pull me in, not so much the melody, but the words that speak volumes, I can connect with and feel something. One reason why I love “Waiting on the World to change” is …
