We are honoured to have a guest post written by Julia Barnes. I was a little nervous to watch Sharkwater Extinction. I knew it would make me emotional. Rob Stewart has been my hero since I was 12. Losing him was devastating and I didn’t want to relive his death. But I was also excited to see his new film, so I attended the premier at TIFF. Hearing his voice and seeing him on the screen, I found myself smiling all the way through. Sharkwater Extinction is not a sad film. It is overwhelmingly inspiring, filled with Rob’s passion and energy. It’s a film that will make you realize you can change the world. Rob’s voice is a constant throughout the movie. His narration guides you through the story as he and his team investigate the trade in endangered shark species, uncovering corruption, deception, and mafia rings. Birthday Wishes, Give With Love, xo

On 13th October 2013, I started a birthday tradition, whereby I selected a group of charities to raise awareness and funds for.  I asked friends and family to kindly make a donation in lieu of gifts.  In my twenties, I had reached a point in my life where I no longer needed to accumulate more things.  I love presents just as much as anyone, but the truth was I didn’t need them.  I would rather friends and family give what they would have spent on a birthday present to a charity instead.  So, with that in mind, I used my blog as a platform to help raise awareness for the selected charities over the years.  This year, the theme is blue.  It is the commonality between all three charities I would like to highlight this year.  Blue is representative of the ocean, which directly correlates to both Force Blue and Grand Cayman Eco Divers: Coral Nursery Conservation Program.  Having spent nearly my entire life living on an island, I am drawn to the ocean.  I …

Festival of Seas: Blue Gala

It is with great pleasure to announce that tomorrow night the 10th annual Festival of Seas: Blue Gala Dinner fundraising event will be held at the ARC, Camana Bay. The Blue Gala dinner helps to raise funds for the Central Caribbean Marine Institute. The CCMI is located in our beloved Little Cayman. The Central Caribbean Marine Institute is Cayman’s only non-profit, and non-governmental organization dedicated to understanding and protecting the islands’ reefs and the life they support. All proceeds directly benefit the CCMI’s mission of protecting the coral reefs for the future. “Currently the work of CCMI shows that although coral cover declined significantly following the 1999 global coral bleaching event, reefs in Cayman recovered completely by 2012.” Our coral reefs are vital to the Cayman Islands, as they are imperative to our ecosystem. Eco Mad hatter Hats

                  Last weekend, The National Trust for the Cayman Islands hosted an awesome 5K Glow Run!! “Light up the night for a brighter future” In the spirit of this fundraising event one of my bestie’s and I joined in with other participants creating funky glow costumes.  We made “Mad Hatter Hats” which of course, had an environmental theme.  One was nature themed, the other ocean themed.  In addition, we added some glow accessories, funky shades, and faux/synthetic feathered boas (which can be recycled for other events). How to make Eco Mad Hatter Hats What you will need: Plastic black top hats (repurposed New Year’s Eve hats), cardboard, faux flowers, faux/synthetic feathers, toilet paper rolls, postcard, sea fan, glow in the dark stickers, glow paint (non-toxic), glue gun. “Dear Verdant Island” The Cayman Islands Blue Iguana was the mascot for this hat 🙂 Made out of cardboard, (repurposed pizza box).
