The Coral Triangle: The Ocean’s Amazon Rainforest

  (Photo Credit: World Wildlife Fund) The Coral Triangle is rich in diversity and home to iridescent corals, fish, marine plant species and crustaceans. Additionally, it is home to twenty-two species of dolphin and endangered dugongs.  Seventy-five percent of the world’s coral species are found here—nearly 600 different species. The Coral Triangle is considered to be the underwater equivalent of Amazon Rainforest.  The reason being, the Amazon comes as a close rival to the Coral Triangle in terms of species richness.  Essentially, the Coral Triangle, is a hot spot for marine life, as it is home to an astonishing amount of marine species, more than anywhere else.  It is massive, spanning across the ocean, encompassing an area that is half the size of the United States.  This incredibly beautiful and rich in diversity, habitat is an underwater wonderland.  Unfortunately, this incredible are of coral reefs faces a variety of threats, including, pollution, climate change, and unsustainable fishing.  As a result, these threats are inflicting negative effects upon this precious eco-system, such as the degradation of …

World Ocean’s Day 2015: Why We Need Sharks…

Happy World Ocean’s Day!  World Ocean’s Day was designated by the United Nations, and this year’s theme is “Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet.”  In honor of this year’s theme, I am focusing on the importance of healthy shark populations, and why sharks are key to maintaining the ocean’s balance and their role in regard to maintaining healthy coral reefs. Please help to keep the ocean and coral reefs healthy.  Also, don’t forget sharks are so valuable to our eco-system, we need healthy shark populations to keep our oceans healthy.  The decline in shark populations can lead to disastrous effects upon the ocean, and it can even lead to the death of the coral reef.  Everything is interconnected.  Sharks play a key role in maintaining the balance of the health of the ocean, coral reefs and our eco-system. Take me past the shores of the seven seas…

        I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!  To kickoff my weekend, I was inspired to take the Poetry Saturday challenge by, My Happy Coincidence.  Here is one of my favorites, click here. A simple task… To take a moment, suspend myself in time and take in my surroundings, waiting to find a spark of inspiration to write.  I love writing, and it’s been a long time since I have actually written any short stories or poetry.  However, today, I have broken my writing silence, so to speak.  I put my headphones on and began listening to Lana Del Rey, while staring at a photograph of the ocean and the words just came.  I  began to fill the empty pages with poetry. David Innis: A love for the ocean and a passion for music.

I am pleased to announce that local singer/songwriter David Innis will be performing at Earth Hour, on Saturday 28th March, at The Crescent, Camana Bay. “I am happy to be a participant in the celebration of our beautiful Earth, and hope that our generation will leave it in a better state than we found it.”-David Innis When it comes to the environment, David has great respect for the ocean. He says, “The movement of the ocean is inspiring to me and my music.” His love for the ocean, has also inspired him to advocate the need to keep our oceans clean, David says, “Keeping trash out of this alluring under-water world is very important to me.” David Innis (Verhoeven) was born in Hawaii, and raised in the Cayman Islands from a young age. He remains close to his Caymanian roots. Photo Credit: Lonely Whale   Hello! Can anybody hear me? Is anybody out there- listening? Radio silence….. Imagine, sending out a plea for connection, only to have your cry become lost in a sea of echoes. The “52 Hertz Whale,” also known as the “Lonely Whale” has for years wandered the ocean solo. Living a life of solitude- completely cut off from bonding and connecting with other whales. Tragically, it is believed that this lonely whale sends out a frequency unlike any other whale; a unique call. To date, it is said that no other whale has responded to this lone whale’s cry. Dr. William Watkins theorized, lonely whale, “was either the first of its kind, the last of its kind, or a whale with a malformation in its call, resulting in its inability to mate or form a bond with any of his species” (Lonely Whale). At the heart of the matter, this gentle giant is a hero with a story to tell. Lonely Whale has spent an entire lifetime roaming through the abyss …
