City Lights & Skylines

Poetry month is almost over.  A little while ago, I took the Poetry Saturday Challenge by My Happy Coincidence.  Unfortunately, I missed last week’s post, so here it is.  Better late than never.  This poem is inspired by the love for art, and wandering through cities. I hope you like it. The photos are snapshots of Boston, one of my favorite cities. Enjoy! with love, xo

Take me past the shores of the seven seas…

I hope everyone is having a wonderful weekend!  To kickoff my weekend, I was inspired to take the Poetry Saturday challenge by, My Happy Coincidence.  Here is one of my favorites, click here. A simple task… To take a moment, suspend myself in time and take in my surroundings, waiting to find a spark of inspiration to write.  I love writing, and it’s been a long time since I have actually written any short stories or poetry.  However, today, I have broken my writing silence, so to speak.  I put my headphones on and began listening to Lana Del Rey, while staring at a photograph of the ocean and the words just came.  I  began to fill the empty pages with poetry. Here you go, my #PoetrySaturday inspiration and creation. I hope you like it. Copyright © 2015 By Laura Butz Have a lovely weekend! with love, xo

Ticktock, Drip Drop

I am dedicating this post in honor of the upcoming World Water Day (22 March).  The first World Water Day was in 1993.  The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as World Water Day.  Since its inception, World Water Day is celebrated around the world, drawing attention to various water related issues. This year’s theme is “Water Is” Check out the video below for more details. I love this theme.  It is important to step back and take a moment to ponder what does water mean to us and our lives.  Water holds such incredible value.  Many times we take it for granted that there is fresh water available to us.  We have clean water to drink, clean with, and cook with.  However, there are many who are not as fortunate.  For instance, “1 in 9 people lack access to safe water” (Water.org). Check out this video by Water.org Water is… everything.  Water is life.  Water is at the heart of our survival.   Conservation International has created an incredible short video raising …

“And the heart must pause to breathe”

Photo Credit: Michael Maes “And the heart must pause to breathe,” words of the legendary poet Lord Byron. These poetic words capture the experience of watching the artistic work of Michael Maes short film “Byron Beholds Kona.” This short film will capture your heart from the start, as you will become immersed in the purity and the spellbinding beauty of the ocean and the wildlife. Most importantly, you will become enthralled by the poetic connection between the ocean and film. Maes, has chosen the words of Lord Byron’s So We’ll Go No More a Roving to accompany the stunning cinematic journey viewers are taken on in the waters of Kona, Hawaii. It’s safe to say Mr. Maes, has created an interesting genre of film called “Poetry eMotion.” Poetry eMotion: How it came to be… Michael Maes says, his wife, Ellen Cuylaerts, told him that “some of his footage is poetry in her eyes” and she, “encouraged him to reach out to poems through his films.” Through the diligent process of filming and editing, Maes …

Starving for a helping hand

Photo Credit Beatrice.  Please check out her awesome website  for more of her amazing photography. Sometimes it seems like we get caught up in a world that is moving at such a fast pace, and everything around you begins to blend together, and we lose focus of what is actually surrounding us.  Walking through the streets in the city it is so easy to get swept away in the crowds and not notice those who are in desperate need.  With the economic crisis we are are currently facing so many are losing their jobs, homes and it begins to feel like what once was solid ground is collapsing beneath you.  Poverty is everywhere. Astonishing Facts About Poverty “Nearly a billion people entered the 21st century unable to read a book or sign their names.” “Almost half the world — over three billion people — live on less than $2.50 a day.”  Source: For more information and statistics about poverty Below is a poem which I wrote about the inequality of this world. -Inequality- Hunger Deprivation Empty …

Fracking: A Mad Rush For Colourless Gold…

Lately, I have been on a bit of a documentary kick, re-watching documentaries and discovering new ones.  In particular, I find environmental documentaries inspiring and thought provoking.  For example, Josh Fox filmed and produced two powerful and informative documentaries, such as Gasland and Gasland 2.  Both documentaries create awareness about the devastating effects fracking is causing on the environment.  Fracking continues to pose many harmful repercussions which impose lasting effects such as contaminating water supplies so much that it is toxic to the point in can catch on fire, air pollution, earthquakes, and illness in animals and human beings.  Thank you Josh Fox for filming and producing two very powerful and informative documentaries about fracking and the toll it is placing on the environment and mankind. Watching a documentary like Gasland, reminds me that art is a powerful tool which can help create positive change in a world that is heavily weighed down by so many issues and problems.  Art has the ability to encourage people to look more critically at the world around us …
