Ticktock, Drip Drop

Waterworks

I am dedicating this post in honor of the upcoming World Water Day (22 March).  The first World Water Day was in 1993.  The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as World Water Day.  Since its inception, World Water Day is celebrated around the world, drawing attention to various water related issues.

This year’s theme is “Water Is” Check out the video below for more details.

I love this theme.  It is important to step back and take a moment to ponder what does water mean to us and our lives.  Water holds such incredible value.  Many times we take it for granted that there is fresh water available to us.  We have clean water to drink, clean with, and cook with.  However, there are many who are not as fortunate.  For instance, “1 in 9 people lack access to safe water” (Water.org).

Water is… everything.  Water is life.  Water is at the heart of our survival.

Conservation International has created an incredible short video raising awareness about the importance of water.

When it comes to environmental issues, sometimes I find it easiest to put my thoughts into words- into art.  Last year, I wrote a poem, “Ticktock, Drip Drop” expressing my view on water related issues.  My hope is for this poem to raise awareness.

Ticktock, Drip Drop

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Icecaps melting.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Droughts raging.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Floods thrashing.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Water wars.

Ticktock, Ticktock,
Drip drop, drip drop

Water scarcity.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Pollution scaling.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Acidity rising.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Coral dying.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Oil spilling.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop

Oceans imperiled.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop drip drop

Water crisis.

Ticktock, Ticktock
Drip drop, drip drop
