I (Heart) Sharks

(Photo Credit: Michael Maes) I (Heart) Sharks! As an ocean lover, I love sharks! Sharks deserve a lot of love. Why? They are amazing and majestic animals. Sharks have inhabited the ocean for more than 400 million years, and they play a key role in maintaining the health of the ocean. Sharks are the apex predators of the ocean, as a result, they are responsible for keeping other marine life in healthy balance and regulate the oceans. The decline in shark populations cause the balance of the eco-system and the balance of the ocean to be seriously upset. Thus, it is imperative that we come together and raise awareness about the importance of sharks and the pivotal role they play in maintaining the eco-system and the health of the ocean. It is vital that we ensure that there are healthy populations of sharks worldwide. Top 5 Reasons To Love Sharks 1. There are more than 500 species of sharks swimming in the ocean. The Coral Triangle: The Ocean’s Amazon Rainforest

(Photo Credit: World Wildlife Fund) The Coral Triangle is rich in diversity and home to iridescent corals, fish, marine plant species and crustaceans. Additionally, it is home to twenty-two species of dolphin and endangered dugongs.  Seventy-five percent of the world’s coral species are found here—nearly 600 different species. The Coral Triangle is considered to be the underwater equivalent of Amazon Rainforest.  The reason being, the Amazon comes as a close rival to the Coral Triangle in terms of species richness.  Essentially, the Coral Triangle, is a hot spot for marine life, as it is home to an astonishing amount of marine species, more than anywhere else.  It is massive, spanning across the ocean, encompassing an area that is half the size of the United States.  This incredibly beautiful and rich in diversity, habitat is an underwater wonderland.  Unfortunately, this incredible are of coral reefs faces a variety of threats, including, pollution, climate change, and unsustainable fishing.  As a result, these threats are inflicting negative effects upon this precious eco-system, such as the degradation of …

Diving Into Ocean Acidification

June is World Ocean Month. In honor of that, the majority of my blog posts will be focusing on the ocean.  Yesterday, was World Ocean Day, and the theme for this year is, “Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet” to see my interview on Talk Show, Daybreak 27 discussing World Ocean Day, click here, for the blog post tie-in click here. There is an ongoing fight to keep our the ocean healthy, however, our ocean is not in the best state of health. As a result of climate change, our oceans are slowly becoming acidic.  Currently, the ocean is in serious trouble, and that is a result of ocean acidification. This is a huge problem. Around 70% of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans.  The ocean plays a huge role in our daily lives, the ocean is responsible for producing about 70% of the oxygen we breathe.  Therefore, it is imperative that we do everything possible to keep the ocean healthy.  Reportedly, about “half of man-made CO2 has been absorbed over time by the oceans. This has benefited …

World Ocean’s Day 2015: Why We Need Sharks…

Happy World Ocean’s Day!  World Ocean’s Day was designated by the United Nations, and this year’s theme is “Healthy Ocean, Healthy Planet.”  In honor of this year’s theme, I am focusing on the importance of healthy shark populations, and why sharks are key to maintaining the ocean’s balance and their role in regard to maintaining healthy coral reefs. Huge thank you to Daybreak 27! To watch my in-depth interview on World Ocean Day 2015 click here Enjoy! Please help to keep the ocean and coral reefs healthy.  Also, don’t forget sharks are so valuable to our eco-system, we need healthy shark populations to keep our oceans healthy.  The decline in shark populations can lead to disastrous effects upon the ocean, and it can even lead to the death of the coral reef.  Everything is interconnected.  Sharks play a key role in maintaining the balance of the health of the ocean, coral reefs and our eco-system. The loss of sharks can disrupt our eco-system and set off a chain reaction, so it is important that we have …

Ticktock, Drip Drop

I am dedicating this post in honor of the upcoming World Water Day (22 March).  The first World Water Day was in 1993.  The United Nations General Assembly designated 22 March as World Water Day.  Since its inception, World Water Day is celebrated around the world, drawing attention to various water related issues. This year’s theme is “Water Is” Check out the video below for more details. I love this theme.  It is important to step back and take a moment to ponder what does water mean to us and our lives.  Water holds such incredible value.  Many times we take it for granted that there is fresh water available to us.  We have clean water to drink, clean with, and cook with.  However, there are many who are not as fortunate.  For instance, “1 in 9 people lack access to safe water” (Water.org). Check out this video by Water.org Water is… everything.  Water is life.  Water is at the heart of our survival.   Conservation International has created an incredible short video raising …
